BA' KELALAN MOUNT MURUD HEADHUNTER’S TRAIL DURATION: 10DAYS 9 NIGHTS
DEPARTURE: DAILY VIA MIRI GRADE: STRENUOUS Day 1: Arrive Miri Airport, meet and transfer to Righa Royal Hotel. Evening, dinner with a choice of Chinese set dinner in the hotel’s Yuan Restaurant or Western / Malaysian set in Brighton coffeehouse. Overnight in the hotel. (Dinner) Day 2: Breakfast in the hotel. Morning, depart Miri by flight for Ba’Kelalan Valley. Upon arrival at Ba’Kelalan, check-in at the lodge and have launch. Afternoon, browse around the valley with a visit the apple and coffee plantations and local village homes of the Muruts and the Lun Bawang tribes. Return to the resort in the late afternoon. Prior to dinner, get a short briefing by your guide on next day’s agenda on your trip to Mount Murud, the highest mountain (2,423m) in Sarawak. Overnight in the lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 3: Early breakfast this morning before departing by 4X4 drive to Lepo’ Bunga where you will start with the first part of your trek up the mountain. Trekking time takes approximately 4 hours with a stop at Church Camp for the night. This village is known to the locals as the Holy Land with the church located just below the summit of the mountain. Dinner and overnight in the lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 4: Depart early this morning to trek up to the mountain summit. Journey takes about 4 hours each way. Return to the lodge in the late evening for the overnight. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 5: After breakfast, trek down to Lepo’ Bunga and return by transportation to Bekalalan Valley. Dinner and overnight in the valley. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 6: Morning, depart Ba’Kelalan by flight to Lawas. Upon arrival in Lawas, have lunch before proceeding by overland to Limbang. From here, you will cross over the Temburong District of Brunei and arrive at the Medamit jetty, where you will embark into a longboat for the journey to Ruman Bala (Iban) Longhouse. Dinner and overnight in the headman’s section of the longhouse. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 7: Breakfast in the longhouse. Morning, proceed by longboat to Mentawai to register your entry into Mulu National Park. Resume by longboat to the starting point of the track for the headhunter’s trail (developed by the Kayan tribe over a century ago). Trekking time takes between 5-6 hours over 12km along a fairly flat ground with only one major river crossing. Arrive at the Camp 5 in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in the camp. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 8: Depart Camp 5 after early breakfast to trek to Kuala Lutut or Berar depending on the water level. Trekking time takes about 12 hours to the pick up point where our longboat will take us down the Melinau River into Mulu. On the way lunch will be served at the entrance of the Clearwater Cave. Take the option of either visiting the Wind and Clearwater Caves today or do this on another day while your are at the resort. Relax or swim in the Clearwater Pool, headwater of the Melinau River. Proceed by longboat down the river and arrive at the Royal Mulu Resort for check-in. Dinner and overnight in the resort. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 9: Breakfast. Morning, free at leisure. Afternoon, proceed by longboat down-river to visit the Penan settlement, Long Iman, to observe some of their delicate art and craft works. Resume by longboat upriver to visit Deer and Lang Caves, accessible via a 3-km plank-walk. After exploring the caves, wait at the caves’ entrance to observe the spectacular bats flight. Return via the same to the resort / resthouse in the night. Late dinner and overnight at the resort. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Day 10: Breakfast. Free at leisure until pick up from the resort for transfer to Mulu Airport for your onwards flight journey. (Breakfast) IMPORTANT NOTICE: * To enable all participants to enjoy the entire tour without any unnecessary interruption, we seek the cooperation and understanding of all participants to observe the local customs and traditions throughout the tour. * Total trekking distance covered comes out to no less than 35kms. It would be helpful is participants can motivate and encourage each other to keep pace with one another. Water level may reach the lowest during the tour. As such, participants may need to help push the boats, at least by turn. * This can be an extremely strenuous tour. Please consider carefully before signing.
