BARIO HIGHLAND MULU TREKKING ADVENTURE

DURATION: 10 DAYS 9 NIGHTS
DEPARTURE: DAILY VIA MIRI EXCEPT SATURDAY
GRADE: STRENUOUS

Day 1: Morning, depart Miri by flight to Bario Highlands. Upon arrival, check in at the lodge. After a local set of lunch at the lodge, proceed to visit Ulung Palang and Bario Asal longhouses inhabited by the Kelabit tribe in the Bario Valley. Return to the lodge. Evening, get a briefing from your guide on the following days’ trekking agenda prior to dinner. Overnight at the lodge. (Lunch & Dinner)

Day 2: After breakfast, pack and proceed to visit Pa’Ukat Longhouse. Resume from Pa’Ukat Longhouse with a trek to Pa’Lungan. Trekking time will take about 3 hours over 10 km passing by a hill called Ra’an Bulu Barit. Arrive Pa’Lungan in the late afternoon. Settle down while your guide prepares dinner. Dinner and overnight at Pa’Lungan. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 3: Start early with breakfast. Proceed to visit the Ritoh Monument before starting the trek to Long Repun. Trekking time takes from 5-6 hours over 14km involving a fairly strenuous climb over Singkulup Hill with a few river crossings. Arrive at Long Repun jungle shelter in the late evening. The shelter is the mid-point in the journey for you to cross over to Indonesia the next day and the site used to be inhabited by the Kelabits (now moved to Pa’Ukat and Pa’Lungan) over 50 years ago during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak. Dinner and overnight at the jungle shelter. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 4: This morning, you will have an early trek over to the Indonesia territory. Trekking time takes around 5 hours over 14km crossing over the Ra’an Bulu hill that marks the Malaysian / Indonesian Border with a stop at the bamboo plantation for lunch. You are now in Indonesia and will stay the night at the local village called Pa’Rupai inhabited by the tribe called Lun Dayeh. Dinner and overnight with the Headman’s family. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 5: After breakfast, continue with our trek to Bekalalan, which will take around 3 hours for 10km plus an hour’s walk (3 km) across the padi fields to arrive at Bekalalan. The initial trek will start at the low land padi fields and then over to our last hill (Ruan Tung) to return to the Malaysian territory. We will arrive in the Bekalalan Valley around midday and proceed straight to the lodging house at Bekalalan. Lunch at the lodge before taking a rest in the afternoon. In the evening, take a walk around the valley and visit some of the longhouses in Bekalalan. The tribes are Muruts and Lun Bawang. Dinner and overnight in the lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 6: Morning, early breakfast before proceeding to visit the coffee/apple plantations in the valley. Your flight at mid-day from Bekalalan to Lawas will be around 45 minutes where you will cross over the Temburong district of Brunei to arrive at the Medamit jetty for a longboat ride to Rumah Bala, longhouse of the Iban tribe. Dinner and overnight in the Headman’s section of the longhouse. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 7: Breakfast in the longhouse. Proceed by longboat to Mentawai where we will help you to register for your entry into Mulu. Resume with the longboat before starting your trek on the Headhunter’s trail (developed by the Kayan tribe over a century ago). Trekking time takes between 5 - 6 hours (12 km) on a fairly flat ground with one major river crossing. Arrive at the camp around 5 in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the camp. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 8: Depart the camp after breakfast by trek to Kuala Lutut (or Berar depending on the water level). Trekking time takes about 2 hours over 8km to the longboat pick-up point where you will proceed down-river to Mulu. On the way lunch will be served at the Clearwater resthouse. Take the option to visit the Wind and Clearwater Caves today or the next day whilst you are at the resort. Relax or swim in the crystal Clearwater pool. Proceed by longboat down-river and arrive at the Royal Mulu Resort / resthouse for check-in. Dinner and overnight at the resort / resthouse. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 9: Breakfast. Morning, free at leisure. Afternoon, proceed by longboat down-river to visit the Penan settlement, Long Iman, to observe some of their delicate art and craft works. Resume by longboat upriver to visit Deer and Lang Caves, accessible via a 3-km plank-walk. After exploring the caves, wait at the caves’ entrance to observe the spectacular bats flight. Return via the same to the resort / resthouse in the night. Late dinner and overnight at the resort. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 10: Breakfast. Free at leisure until pick up from the resort for transfer to Mulu Airport for your onwards flight journey. (Breakfast)

NOTES

* Participation per trek is advisable to be limited to 8 persons.
* This trek requires a fair bit of fitness & endurance from participants.
* Uphill & downhill treks have a height of between 1100-1400 feet with river crossings.
* Total trekking distance covered is approximately 50 km.
* In the event of flight cancellation from Bakelalan to Lawas, alternative is overland travel on a 4x4 drive.
